Club Weed
Above is another monster from my work-in-progress game "Smokin' Weeds". this is a "Club Weed". It was created as a slightly shorter ranged, but tougher and harder hitting version of the "Knife weed", being a close ranged creature. I wanted the monster to look bulky and have similar proportions to more muscular wrestlers and aliens.
This was the original sketch of the club weed. I knew that this sketch was exactly what I wanted the final creature to look like. I originally wanted his face to be hidden and only have its eyes be visible but changed that in the final version. His lower torso were wraps which were arranged to look like a set of abdominal muscles, while the upper torso went in a different direction with spikes around his back.
I made the creature by layering a bunch of tapered curves over one another and having the head and hands be spheres. The hand spheres had cones sticking out of them for spikes.
I animated this creature with the necessary actions (shown above) and put it in the game,
For the render, I used the standard toon shader I had earlier, but changed the highlight color to green, white was too bright. I also added an element to the shader to use hatch lines on the pot and plant. I finished the render by adding the grease pencil to all the geometry in the scene to add outlines.
